Welcome! Please introduce yourself

Hi all, Happy new year for all of you.

I am Tharaka Nilushan. I am a Quantity Surveying student in University Of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Upto now programming was one-thing I have done to spend time. I though of giving it a try to contribute to opensource community. Hope OpenMRS will be the best place for that. I see a lot to learn regarding programming + community over here.

Thank you @tharaka

My name is Naveen Karippai and I hold a MSc degree from Hochschule Karlsruhe, Germany. I have experience with web technologies (PHP, Python, JavaScript and Java) over the past few years.

The idea behind openMRS “write code, save lives” is pretty impressive and I like exploring the possibilities of open source software world. This was the major reason for me to start with openMRS and I’m hoping to bring contributions to the community.

Cheers! Naveen

I’m Tom Naps from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. I will be teaching a software engineering course in our coming spring semester (starting in February). I hope to use OpenMRS as a case study from which my students will start their work in the course. My goal is for the students (and myself) to understand the design structure of OpenMRS to the point where we can develop within it. Ultimately I’d like for some of the students to become active contributors to the project since I think the premise OpemMRS works from – humanitarian free open-source software – is very important for them to be aware of.

We also have a College of Nursing at our campus, and I’d like to explore with them the possibility of using OpenMRS in the training of their students. Right now they are using a proprietary system called “Neehr Perfect” for doing this. I would be interested in finding out if anyone else is using OpenMRS in the training of medical/nursing students.

Hi everyone

I’m Hashan samindika Kulasiri. I’m a medical doctor attached to the department of health, Ministry of Health, Nutrition and indigenous medicine Sri Lanka. I have a special interest in IT and now i’m doing a post graduate MSc in BioMedical Informatics at Post Graduate Institute of Medicine University of Colombo (since2014). I started working with OpenMRS about an year back when I was allocated to Human Genetics Unit (HGU) at the Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo.

OpenMRS based medical record system was implemented at the Human Genetics Unit 2 years back (2014) by a MSc Bio Medical Informatics trainee(Dr R Niranjan) after evaluation of usage and user satisfaction using a case study. OpenMRS was installed for a desktop computer using Linux operating system at HGU where both wireless and wired LAN (Local Area Network) were available. Open MRS was installed on MySQL database as its database and Apache Tomcat web server Laptops were distributed in main working areas and connected through the LAN. OpenMRS was customized and modifications were done to improve user satisfaction. As required by most of the system users a modification of electronic health record was done to integrate pedigree drawing function and unlimited file uploading facility to the database in all formats of file types. User accounts were created and passwords were given to all the staff at the Human Genetics Unit. Each staff member was able to log in to the OpenMRS system using a web browser like Mozilla Firebox with their computers connected to the LAN. After the implementation it was possible to store, find, view and analyze the patient data at the genetics clinics more meticulously than using the paper forms.

But I have noticed that the users are not taking the benefits of the system and this OpenMRS system is not used at many occasions and most of the users still prefer working with old paper forms. This motivated me to find out why these staff with highly technical minds not using the system and further customize the OpenMRS system to make the system more usable.

So I started on finding out why they are not interested much in using the system and now trying to futher customise it. I think this community will help me towards building a user satisfied well customized OpenMRS at HGU.

The Most important part is I’m not a genius in IT or Computer programming.
