3.9.0 release — community input needed on the scope

Hi everyone,

As we get closer to wrapping up the 3.8.0 release, it’s a good time to start bouncing ideas for 3.9.0. We have a rough list of candidate items on the wiki:

The items proposed so far are grounded in one of these things:

  • Direct implementer asks we’ve heard from across the community
  • Already-ongoing work that is likely to land in the 3.9.0 window
  • Features with requirements already in place, so the implementation path is relatively clear

We’d love your input on this draft. Specifically:

  • Review the proposed list and flag anything that resonates (endorse) or doesn’t.
  • Add your own ideas — anything your implementation is prioritising, pain points you want solved, or capabilities you’ve been waiting for
  • Volunteer to help with requirements for items that don’t yet have them (and review of those with requirements) — this is often the biggest blocker to moving an idea into real work, and community help here goes a long way

Please drop your thoughts here on the thread, or comment directly on the wiki page.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you @veronica for this.

I would like to take ownership of continuing my GSoC project (Implement O3 with the Authentication Module) for the 3.9.0 release by implementing Email as a new 2FA method. There’s also a follow-up ticket I need to address, along with implementing the functionality to remove any 2FA method.

Additionally, I’d be happy if we can improve the Growth Chart feature for the 3.9.0 release, at least by adding a height-for-age chart using WHO references. I’ve noticed some new contributors putting their effort on this, but there doesn’t seem to have been much progress so far.

Thank you!

I think we should also include the Enhanced Appointments Calendar View in the 3.9.0 roadmap. Since this was a previous GSoC project that wasn’t completed, it would be great to revisit it. @ibacher and @jayasanka what do you think? I’d be happy to take ownership of this and help drive it forward.

If you’re willing to take up getting it over the line, I’d love to have it in the next release!
