Title: Hello OpenMRS Family – New Contributor Learning Java
Hello OpenMRS Community,
My name is Sebaana Yusuf Salim, and I’m excited to introduce myself as a new member here. I’ve just completed my Diploma in Computer Science, and I’m currently deepening my understanding of Java, which I understand is a key part of OpenMRS development.
I’m based in Mukono-Ntawo, Uganda, and I’ve always been passionate about tech that makes real-world impact — especially in healthcare. My goal is to actively contribute to the OpenMRS platform, learn from this amazing global community, and grow into a developer who can solve problems that matter.
I’m also into frontend development, with some experience in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and I’m slowly getting comfortable with backend concepts too. Aside from coding, I love singing, learning new things, and building with others.
I would really appreciate any tips or beginner-friendly issues to help me get started. I’m here to learn, collaborate, and contribute wherever I can. Looking forward to connecting with many of you and growing together .

New here. I’m a teacher for the Computer Science (software engineering) department at Avans University in Breda, The Netherlands. We are in the middle of developing a new curriculum and /have started shaping the last part of the second year, which will run for the first time next year (so around this time in 2026).
It seemed like a nice idea to use a real-life application for the students to work with and we think we have found this in OpenMRS, not only from a technical point of view but also with regard to ‘public interest’ and sustainable development (relating the SDG’s to the work done by students is part of the process).
Right now I’m figuring things out to see if this environment is suitable for the level of our students. The theme of this period is integration and software quality and so far this project looks very promising.
Once I’m a bit more familiar with OpenMRS (both on a technical level and organization wise) I’ll probably start asking pointers for useful work that can be implemented by small groups in a timespan of a few weeks up to two months and options for support / coaching from this community.
I’m Jayaditya, and I’m really excited to be part of this amazing community!
I’m currently enrolled in a coding bootcamp where I’m learning Data Structures & Algorithms, System Design (LLD & HLD), and Java backend development using Spring Boot. I recently built a movie streaming website using React and public APIs, and now I’m focused on sharpening my backend skills.
I’m especially interested in contributing to OpenMRS as part of my preparation for Google Summer of Code 2026. I’m in the process of setting up the project locally and looking forward to picking up beginner-friendly issues to get involved.
Really excited to learn, contribute, and grow with all of you!
