OK, but the sources appear in QA and QA is the test implementation (so it needs to be fully functional)

I see what you are saying. You are right.
We are currently making the decision as to whether a source is internal or external based on the source_type;
cf; https://api.qa.openconceptlab.org/sources/?verbose=true&q=SN* and https://api.demo.openconceptlab.org/sources/?verbose=true&q=SN*
Do you see any other attributes on these we could be using instead or in addition to? We could also consider sources with a Dictionary source type to be external.
