I strongly believe that better i18n / translation is a really important part of OpenMRS’ product and community strategy, because (a) we are literally a global product/community, and (b) as the funding world becomes less anglo-centric, it’s more important than ever that Governments, NGOs, Vendors and Health Sites around the world know that OpenMRS is a viable option in their country, in their language!
But the amount of translation we need is only possible through community. We talk publicly about French a lot, but there are other languages / translators we don’t talk about as publicly.
So: I just want to give a public, HUGE THANK YOU to the following little-known HEROS who have been very busy quietly using Transifex to translate OpenMRS 3 into many different languages over the past months since we launched the better Translation Guide and announced better Transifex/Code integration! I’m so touched, humbled, and amazed by your huge contributions.
- @popescuaandrei (msit in Transifex) has translated >99% into Romanian
- @achmadns (achmadns in Transifex) has translated >97% into Indonesian
- @alvax @duvet05 have made tons of contributions to Spanish, bringing us to >90% translated into Spanish
- Temuri Doghonadze (NorwayFun in Transifex) has translated >84% into Georgian
- Andrea Diotallevi and Rafa Tech (andreadiotta and rrm.tech) have translated >73% into Italian
- @linxd and Chenkai Zhang (ToxicToast) who have been adding more Chinese translations bringing us up to >66% into Chinese
- @pirupius who together with MSF Iraq folks have added more Arabic translations bringing us up to >61% into Arabic
- @filipelopes’ continued work brings us to 67% in Brazilian Portuguese
- Contributions from Nelia Baptista have brought us to >54% in Portuguese
- @sang9xpro’s work brings us to >42% in Vietnamese
Extra special “brownie points” to @achmadns and @popescuaandrei who even did a bunch of work directly in the OpenMRS 3 Glossary in Transifex for Romanian and Indonesian - an Advanced feature! This really impressed me because we haven’t done any formal community training or documentation on updating the glossary. Great job!!

(FAQ: “But wait, Grace: Why does it seem like some %'s go down?” This is because whenever a new app or feature is added to the O3 EMR, that new thing comes with new strings. This means a language could have been 100% translated a few months ago, but now that there’s more features added (e.g. the recently added Bed Management module) the overall % will go down because there’s new strings that need to be translated.)
