📢 OpenMRS AI Hackathon 2026: Call for Project Submissions is OPEN! (Deadline: June 20)

Hello OpenMRS Community!

The momentum from our AI Squad calls is officially turning into action! Coordinated by a joint effort between the OpenMRS AI Squad and EMR4All, we are officially counting down to the global, virtual OpenMRS AI Hackathon 2026 taking place online this July.

Whether you have been experimenting with local edge models, streamlining code workflows with AI agents or building advanced clinical decision tools, it’s time to move your innovations to the community stage.

To help our community Voting Panel evaluate, compare and identify scale-ready solutions, all project contributors must submit their technical specs and video demos by June 20.

:hourglass_not_done: Key Dates & Strict Deadlines

  • Project Submission Deadline: Saturday, June 20, 2026 (11:59 PM UTC)
  • Live Hackathon Sessions: July 06 – 08, 2026 (2 hours of daily live sessions)

:warning: Important: The submission portal will close automatically on June 20. Late dossiers cannot be accepted, as our panel needs this pre-scoring window to organize the track showcases for the live event!

:hammer_and_wrench: The 3 Hackathon Tracks

Your project submission must align with one of our three core focus areas:

  • Clinical Track: AI solutions for clinical decision-making, point-of-care workflows, voice transcription, and diagnostics.
  • Implementer Track: AI tools that accelerate OpenMRS setup and support—ranging from configuration assistants and localization/translation tools to deployment automation.
  • Developer Track: AI-powered developer frameworks that assist contributors in writing, testing, reviewing, and maintaining clean code for the ecosystem.

:memo: What to Prepare for Your Submission Dossier

To complete the submission form, you will need to provide:

  1. General Details: Project name, team members, contact info and your target track.
  2. Video Demonstration (Required): A 3–5 minute video link (Loom, YouTube, or Drive) stating the core problem, showcasing a live demo of your working AI solution and demonstrating how it interacts with OpenMRS.
  3. Technical Architecture: How your tool interacts with the EMR (REST, FHIR, O3 module, offline containers), its repository/license type and its distribution model (eg. Open Source etc.).
  4. Infrastructure Requirements: Connectivity needs (100% Offline, Hybrid, Cloud Dependent) and the minimum clinic-level hardware needs.
  5. Community Impact Statement: A short write-up (max 250 words) explaining why the community should adopt or consider scaling your solution.
