New to OpenMRS: Looking for mentoring and contribution for projects

Hello guys, my name is Rudra Sengupta, and I am a Biomedical Engineering and Data Science dual degree sophomore at University of Florida, looking to get experience with healthcare-based projects. I have experience programming in Python, Java, and know a little bit of Javascript (React, Node etc).

As a new member of OpenMRS, I want to get involved as a developer. Can somebody please guide me as to where to start, and some projects/features I can start working on from the get go with my tech stack. I am open to expanding my tech stack as needed.

Hi Rudra, welcome to the OpenMRS community! :waving_hand:

It’s great to see your interest in contributing. A good place to start is the Getting Started as a Developer guide:

If you haven’t already, request access to the OpenMRS Jira through the Help Desk linked in the guide. Once your access is approved, you can browse issues labeled Intro, Good First Issue, or those related to the frontend/backend areas that interest you.

When you find an issue you’d like to work on:

  • Read through the description and linked resources.
  • Leave a comment on the Jira issue expressing your interest before you start working on it.
  • If anything is unclear, ask questions on the Jira ticket or create a post in the Ask OpenMRS category here on Talk. Community members and mentors are always happy to help.

If you run into setup issues, failing tests, or anything that refuses to work, don’t get discouraged. Share the error messages, logs, and what you’ve already tried either on the Jira ticket, on Talk, or in the community Slack, and someone will usually point you in the right direction.

I also highly recommend attending the New Contributors (Newbie) Calls. They’re a great way to meet mentors, learn how the community works, get guidance on selecting your first issue, and ask questions live. You can find upcoming meetings on the OpenMRS Community Calendar:

Looking forward to seeing your first contribution. Welcome aboard!
