My name is Sonali. I am a computer science student and I am starting my open-source journey.
I am interested in contributing to OpenMRS and preparing for Google Summer of Code. I would like to start with documentation and beginner-friendly issues.
I recommend that you visit the Getting Started as a Developer on the OpenMRS wiki. There, you’ll learn about the different projects, the development environment required to contribute, and other important information to help you get started as an OpenMRS developer.
Thank you very much for the guidance and the warm welcome.
I will go through the “Getting Started as a Developer” documentation and set up my development environment. I am especially interested in starting with documentation and beginner-friendly issues.
Great to see your interest in open source . A good place to begin is the OpenMRS Contributing Guide, which explains how to get started and make your first contributions:
https://guide.openmrs.org/contributing/
You can also check the Getting Started as a Developer guide on the OpenMRS Wiki:
For exploring the application without local setup, you can use the OpenMRS dev server:
https://dev3.openmrs.org
I’d recommend starting with documentation tasks or issues labeled intro / good first issue on Jira. Also, feel free to join the OpenMRS Slack and ask questions there — the community is very supportive.

I am also interested in joining any community or squad calls to learn more about current projects.
I’m Panav, a sophomore in the Mathematics & Computing branch at IIT Kanpur.
I’ve set up the openmrs-esm-core repository locally and synced my fork with upstream.
I noticed that there are currently no open issues on the GitHub repo, but there are several related tickets on the OpenMRS Jira board.
I wanted to ask:
• For esm-core contributions, should I pick tasks directly from Jira?
• Are there any specific Jira issues or categories that are recommended for new contributors to start with?
• Or is there another preferred way to begin contributing to this repo?
I’m mainly interested in frontend / micro-frontend related work and happy to start with something small.
