To all selected contributors

We’d love to get to know you a little better!

When you get a chance, please reply to this post with:

  1. Where are you from / currently based?
  2. Tell us about your project in a sentence or two
  3. What made you choose to contribute to OpenMRS?
  4. Share one (or more) interesting or fun facts about yourself (could be a hobby, a fun story, or something unique about you!)

:love_letter: A message to those who were not selected

First and foremost, thank you. Thank you for your time, your energy, and your belief in what we’re building at OpenMRS. We know how much work it takes to put together an application, and we genuinely appreciate your effort.

Not being selected doesn’t mean your application wasn’t good enough — far from it. In fact, we had to leave out many promising applications simply because of the limited slots. We saw potential. We saw passion. And we hope you won’t let this one decision stop you from continuing your journey.

Please don’t be discouraged.
GSoC is just one doorway, the OpenMRS community has many paths for you to grow, contribute, and build something meaningful. In fact, some of our most impactful contributors never did GSoC — they just showed up, contributed, asked questions, and grew into leadership roles.

You’re not alone, I’m here if you’d like to chat: :backhand_index_pointing_right: jaye.cc/meet
Or feel free to reach out to @Beryl.

Stay curious. Keep building. You belong here. :heart_hands:

:white_check_mark: What’s next for accepted contributors and mentors:

:date: We’ll be hosting a orientation session for both contributors and mentors on 2025-05-14T12:00:00Z . Calendar invites will be sent soon.

Let’s make this summer impactful, supportive, and fun.

Hi everyone! :man_raising_hand:t2:

I’m Harsh Thakkar from India, currently a 3rd-year Computer Science and Engineering student.

I have been selected for the project “Improved Implementer Tools,” where I will be fixing some of the existing issues that cause the app to break down, along with making some major and minor improvements, under the guidance of @vasharma05 and @jnsereko.

I was well-equipped with my frontend skills and was looking to test them, and what better way to do that than through open source projects! I found OpenMRS to be a very beginner-friendly, supportive, and welcoming community, where even small contributions are truly appreciated.

Playing video games in my free time is the second most important thing to me after work. I’m a PlayStation fanboy! :video_game:

I’m really excited for this journey, how it will impact my career trajectory and learning. I will make the most of this opportunity to learn from such great mentors and the community. :rocket:

Many congratulations to all the other contributors as well! :tada: Looking forward to building great connections with everyone! :raising_hands:t3:

Hello everyone! :waving_hand:t2:

My name is M. Praneeth.

I’m from Andhra Pradesh, India, and I’m currently heading into my 4th year in Electronics and Communication Engineering IIIT RGUKT RK VALLEY AP.

I’ve been selected for the Immunization & Vaccination Schedule App project. This enhances the openmrs-esm-immunizations-app in OpenMRS 3’s patient chart to help clinicians better manage vaccinations. It adds features like vaccination schedules, overdue alerts, and an immunization history table.

Honestly, I didn’t even know programs like this existed until I came across GSoC while learning DSA on YouTube. I kept hearing about the exposure and opportunities it offers. While searching for organizations, I saw a tweet from @Jayasanka and read his inspiring blog post here, and I decided to stick with OpenMRS no matter the outcome.

In the beginning, @lumuchris256 guided me on how to get started—how to pick issues, solve them, and communicate effectively. Then during the GSoC proposal period, I reached out to @vijaykv, who helped me understand how to write a proposal and reach out to mentors. I’d also like to thank @veronica, @grace, @dkigen, @nethmi, @vasharma05 and @chibongho1—your encouragement and appreciation kept me going. I’m truly grateful to all of you!

An interesting thing about me is that whenever I pick up something new, I become obsessed with it—I work hard and give it my all to achieve mastery. In my free time, I love reading books—currently reading The Almanack of Naval Ravikant—and listening to podcasts, especially The Joe Rogan Experience

:sparkles: Congratulations to all the other selected contributors as well! Excited to be on this journey with you all—let’s learn, grow, and make an impact together! :rocket:

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all having a fantastic day! :sparkles:

I’m Marvin Sukumar, a 2nd-year Computer Science undergrad from Mumbai, India and I’m super excited to be part of GSoC 2025 with OpenMRS!

My project focuses on enhancing the OpenAPI documentation for OpenMRS by generating OpenAPI specs at build-time using a custom Maven plugin making our REST APIs more discoverable, maintainable, and developer-friendly!

I’ve always been curious about open source, but for a long time, I didn’t really know where to start. GSoC felt like the perfect opportunity to dive in. After going through different organizations and engaging with communities, OpenMRS stood out miles ahead — the warmth of this community and the incredibly supportive mentors made me feel right at home. I knew this was the place to grow, contribute meaningfully, and learn something new every day.

A fun fact about me you’ll quickly find out how much I love pets, especially dogs! I’ve cared for so many and absolutely love spending time with them.

And a little story even as a kid, I knew I wanted to work with computers. I used to teach my uncles how to use the PC (which I’d just figured out myself :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:), and by 7th grade, I was already exploring HTML by digging into code on my own. That same curiosity is what led me here on my open-source journey!

Looking forward to an amazing summer of collaboration, coding, and community with all of you!

I’m Jayendra Ganesh Devisetti, a Computer Science graduate from PES University, based in Bangalore for the past 18 years, though my roots trace back to Andhra Pradesh. I’m thrilled to be part of GSoC 2025 with OpenMRS!

This summer, I’ll be working on Enhancing the Performance Testing Infrastructure for OpenMRS—a project initially laid out by @jayasanka and @bawanthathilan . Their amazing groundwork has opened up the opportunity to refine performance testing further, helping us identify bottlenecks in various endpoints. In a healthcare setting where responsiveness is critical, this project has the potential to make a real difference.

GSoC has been a long-standing goal for me. I tried last year, but the organizations I chose either weren’t active or lacked proper documentation, which made it hard to stay motivated. This year, I stumbled upon OpenMRS, and despite the initial learning curve, the incredibly welcoming community made all the difference. Mentors and even fellow contributors were always ready to help—it genuinely felt like being part of something bigger :rocket:.

Outside of coding, I’m someone who loves to keep things fresh—I rarely stick to just one hobby. From gaming on my PC and PS5, to playing billiards and badminton, I’m always trying new things. Lately, I’ve been eyeing pickleball as my next go-to activity, and I can’t wait to give it a try!

Super excited for a summer full of learning, collaboration, and impact with the OpenMRS community!

Hi everyone😊

I’m Mutagubya Jonathan from Uganda, currently in my last year at Bugema University doing Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering.

Have been selected to work on Replacing OpenMRS Standalone with a Modern, User-Friendly Alternative. I remember back in 2021 when i joined the community  Standalone was one of the quickest way to use openmrs with just a click and run. And just working on this together with my mentors @dkayiwa and @wikumc really brings excitement for me to dive more in the field of advancing my skills

One of the things that made me pick out this project was the community itself. Having progressed this far in the community so far 3+ years i really so this as an opportunity to give back to this wonderful community which has contributed in changing my life. And also thanks to @mherman22 for pushing me through to apply, also @beryl and @dkayiwa for the motivation.

The fun fact → one thing that takes my free time is playing video games :video_game: and learning new soft skills

And a little message :japanese_symbol_for_beginner: To all aspiring developers and open-source contributors:

Start small, stay consistent, ask questions, and never underestimate the power of community.

Hi everyone

My name is Bharath Kumar Shetty

I’m from Mangalore,India and I’m currently pursuing BE in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from MITE,Mangalore.

I’ve been selected for the Interactive Translation Builder for the Form Builder project. This project enhances the OpenMRS 3 Form Builder by enabling a dynamic, user-friendly interface for managing form translations.

I’ve always been curious about exploring impactful opportunities, and that curiosity led me to discover Google Summer of Code (GSoC). Once I decided to participate, I began filtering organizations based on my tech stack and interests. That’s when I came across OpenMRS. After joining their Slack community, I was immediately welcomed by incredibly helpful and encouraging members. The collaborative and mission-driven environment made me feel that this was the kind of community I truly wanted to be a part of. From that moment, I knew OpenMRS was the perfect organization for me to contribute to—not just for GSoC, but also for long-term meaningful impact in global healthcare.

Outside of tech, I’m someone who finds inspiration in unexpected places—I enjoy watching podcasts that spark new ideas and perspectives. I’ve always had a deep respect for discipline and service, which is why joining the Indian Army was once a dream of mine. While I ended up choosing tech as my profession, my passion for travel keeps me grounded and constantly curious about the world beyond screens.

Super excited for this summer with all of you

Hey folks :waving_hand:

I’m Salifu Njidda from Cameroon, currently based in Buea. I’m currently wrapping up a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Software Engineering in the next two months to come(finalizing my thesis project). This summer, I’ll be working on Improved Audit Logging, a project focused on enhancing how audit data is managed and accessed in OpenMRS. I’m excited to collaborate with my mentors @wikumc and @manojll to design features like read-audit tracking, filtering, and REST APIs for external audit log access.

What drew me to this project aside from the amazing OpenMRS community is my deep interest in how IT can be applied to improve healthcare systems. Coming from a country where poor healthcare delivery is still a serious issue, I’ve always believed things could be done differently and better. That hope is one of the key reasons I joined OpenMRS.

:soccer_ball: Fun fact: Outside of coding, I love sports and never miss a good soccer match whether I’m watching or playing.

:love_letter: To those who weren’t selected: Your effort is seen and appreciated. Selection doesn’t define your potential. Keep contributing, stay curious, and know that you belong here there are so many ways to grow within the OpenMRS community.

Looking forward to an amazing summer with you all! keep going and keep growing
