The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine - ID, HIV/AIDs and Global Medicine Division is a vital academic research and clinical center whose goals include generating new knowledge to improve the care of vulnerable patients.

This position will based in Sindo, Kenya at the project offices managed by our local implementing partners, KEMRI and RCTP-FACES, to provide technical expertise in OpenMRS & SQL and data quality assurance for a variety of data requests under the international SEARCH research program in the UCSF Department of Medicine. SEARCH (Sustainable East Africa Research Collaboration) is a multinational, multidisciplinary consortium assembled to conduct research that evaluates bold health interventions at the community level that inform policy makers and funding agencies through the inclusion of health, economic and education parameters and through innovative, efficient study designs.

This Kenya SEARCH OpenMRS & QI Data Manager will perform databases management for a very large trial, develop and oversee data quality improvement at the multiple clinic and field sites, and liaison with the data managers in Uganda and the U.S. The research data analyst will assist in overseeing data entry activities and provide feedback to in-country data teams. The Kenya SEARCH OpenMRS & QI Data Manager will ensure data are structured, checked for errors and uploaded at planned scheduled dates. This involves managing data from multiple locations and working with a variety of UCSF and non-UCSF faculty and staff.

In addition, the Kenya SEARCH OpenMRS & QI Data Manager will provide oversight to in-country data entry and management activities, data cleaning and de-duplication procedures, technical documentation, and provide technical and analytic expertise to address data inquiries, which will contribute to high-level executive committee and leadership decision-making.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer sciences, social sciences with statistical training, or related field equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One year or more of previous data management experience
  • Must have one or more years of OpenMRS & SQL experience
  • Apply practical knowledge of the following programming languages:SQL
  • Working knowledge of SAS, STATA or R
  • Proven ability to extract data from relational databases using SQL
  • Knowledge and experience in the creation of Microsoft Access databases, and entry forms.
  • Knowledge in the areas of epidemiology and study design
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear instructions to data entry staff and researchers
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of team members, including clinical officers, laboratory managers, field research coordinators and assistants, and data officers
  • Experience providing database management on health services research datasets
  • Experience leader data quality improvement activities
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize among competing, multiple priorities; good organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initial direction from others and complete work independently
  • Previous applied knowledge of clinical research regulations, including IRB and data security policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and succinctly in spoken and written English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in computer sciences, social sciences with statistical training, or related field equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience providing database management on health services research datasets in international settings
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting HIV health services research with populations at risk for HIV
