Hi Sameera, welcome to the community! ![]()
Yes, there is active AI work in OpenMRS. The most concrete evidence that i have also got a chance to see is Chart Search (ChartSearchAI), which is currently in development. Clinicians ask natural-language questions about a patient (e.g. “Allergies?” or “When was the last tetanus shot?”) and get answers with source citations back to the chart. Key design points from the project page:

Beyond that, I’m sure that the AI direction is still being shaped with the community.
A few more places to start:
AI and OpenMRS community kick-off discussion: 🤖 AI and OpenMRS: Community Kick-off Discussion . It lists early use cases such as converting paper forms into O3 forms, concept/terminology matching, summarising discharge instructions, and chart search.
Making OpenMRS easier for AI tools: Small project idea to make OpenMRS easier for AI tools . This is about giving LLMs concise context on the data model.
2026-01-29 AI meeting notes: https://openmrs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/projects/pages/792363051/2026-01-29+AI+Meeting+Notes. They cover the technical direction, including the difficulty of the EAV model for AI and ideas for a flattened, AI-friendly patient record.
hope this helps.
