Sorry for the delay in responding Daniel. I’m in the meeting right now. I understand it might take a bit for you to see this message so I’ll stay on the meeting
@dkayiwa I’m joining the meeting right now
@dkayiwa Thanks for meeting! The terminal is still running but when I go to http://localhost/openmrs/spa/home, I see the full interface (as seen below); I don’t believe the earlier link is for the demo but it looks like it includes demo patient profiles; do you know if that’s the case or is this what should show up for Advanced Installation versions when all is done with set-up?
Sorry about all the questions Daniel. The terminal is still running, as seen below. I know you said it should take 15-30 min so just wanted to check if I should enter a command or another intervention for it to complete.
From the terminal output, the setup is done. The rest are normal logs that will keep getting added as you run the application. The default setup has demo data for you to get something to play with. But demo data creation can be turned off.
I just have a couple questions (sorry about having quite a few):
- Just to confirm, I can close out of the terminal?
- If I close out of the terminal, will I be able to re-open it with all the command lines still available?
- How could I go about turning demo data creation off? Or rather, it would be even better if I could reset it so that it comes with a clean slate of data.
- After trying to log into http://localhost/openmrs/spa/login this morning, I found that it would need me to create my own username/password. I tried using the one I have for OpenMRS Talk (my username/password for it), but that didn’t seem to work. How should I go about setting up a username/password?
Also, could you share how I could remove Java 8 from my computer? I know that I had initially needed it with MySQL but since using Docker, it isn’t a need. I have Java 13 or 14 I believe & we added Java 8 but looking at the uninstall instructions here: https://www.java.com/en/uninstall/uninstall_instructions.html, I’m not sure if it would uninstall both versions of Java or how I could change the commands to specify Java 8
Thanks @dkayiwa. There are a couple questions I wasn’t able to figure out:
- I found that OpenMRS now needs me to create my own username/password. How should I go about setting up a username/password?
- It seems like I need to have Docker started up in order to have the OpenMRS URL (http://localhost/openmrs/spa/login) work. Just wanted to confirm if that’s the case
- Looking at the file that needs to be edited to “0”, would I find this in the terminal & do something like Cmd+F to edit this part of the command line?
- Could you share how I could remove Java 8 from my computer? I know that I had initially needed it with MySQL but since using Docker, it isn’t a need. I have Java 13 or 14 I believe & we added Java 8 but looking at the uninstall instructions here: https://www.java.com/en/uninstall/uninstall_instructions.html, I’m not sure if it would uninstall both versions of Java or how I could change the commands to specify Java 8

Yes that’s the case.
Clone this repository: GitHub - openmrs/openmrs-distro-referenceapplication: The reference distribution of the OpenMRS EMR application (v3)
Then change the value to 0 from your locally cloned file on the file system for: openmrs-distro-referenceapplication/distro/configuration/globalproperties/globalproperties-core_demo.xml at main · openmrs/openmrs-distro-referenceapplication · GitHub
Then change to your cloned folder and run docker compose build
After which you will run docker compose up
You do not need to remove it. They can all exist without problems.
Thanks @dkayiwa ! I’m not sure if your first link includes images from OpenMRS 2 because the menu options contrast - so I wasn’t able to find where I could add myself as a new user. Below are the two images (top is on the link you showed me; bottom is what I see on OpenMRS 3 when I go to “System Administration”). I think I’ll join your platform team call to discuss this & the 3rd question since, while I see what repository you’re talking about, I’m not sure where to clone it to. Just to confirm, will both your platform team call & the Coffee Break take place this Thursday? I can hop in if so
About the 4th question (removing Java 8), I’d like to do this to free up space in my Mac since I’m running out. I’ve done a search online & found those uninstall instructions but I want to make sure I’m specifically uninstalling Java 8. I’m sorry about all these questions! Thank you for bearing with me and my lack of technical know-how
Hi @dkayiwa , I joined in on the platform call but not sure if it’s being hosted today? Which days does it take place?
Thanks Daniel, I’ll be sure to check this next Monday to hop in on a meeting next week. Are you usually on all meetings or which ones do you go to? I thought it’d be helpful to seek your guidance with my earlier questions since we’ve already talked through where I’m at so far.
They are not all for this kind of issue. The coffee break would be a very good one. But if your time zone does not favour you to attend, we could arrange for a different one.
Would sometime today work for you? I’m in Central Time & I believe you’re 6 hours ahead. It’s 9:03am as of this message
We can meet on Monday 26th Feb 2024, at your convenient time.
I’m free in the morning. Does 8am Central Time work for you? That’d be 2pm for you if I’m correct that you’re 6 hours ahead
Hey Daniel, I know it’s getting late in the day for you. I’m free for quite a bit of tomorrow. Let me know what time slots work best for you tomorrow afternoon/evening if you see this tomorrow morning. Or feel free to share another day you want to schedule for
You can join the Monday to Thursday daily coffee break which happens 30 minutes after your proposed time.
