GSoC 2025 Proposal: Exploring Pet Health Record Integration Using FHIR (OpenPetCare)

Hi OpenMRS Community,

My name is Triva Watlington, and I’m a Product Manager with a background in IT project management, e-commerce, and pet health tech. I’m applying for Google Summer of Code 2025, and I’m exploring the opportunity to contribute a project that complements the OpenMRS mission while extending support to a new domain: veterinary and pet health.

The proposed project is called OpenPetCare — an open-source, FHIR-compliant pet health record platform designed for animal shelters, veterinary clinics, and pet owners, especially in underserved areas. This system would enable:

  • Structured recording of pet vaccinations, diagnostics, and routine care using FHIR resources (Patient, Condition, Immunization, Observation, etc.)

  • QR code and offline (PWA) support for low-resource field teams and rescue organizations

  • A modular design that could be a companion application or integration-ready service aligned with OpenMRS architecture

I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether a project like this would be in scope for OpenMRS’s GSoC efforts this year — either as a standalone companion system, or perhaps as an extension/module within the OpenMRS framework.

:wrench: Technical Experience & Background:

  • Product leadership at VCA Animal Hospitals, Dollar Tree, IKEA, and Creative Goods Merchandise

  • Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), Google Project Manager Certificate

  • Familiar with Django REST Framework, React, OAuth2, FHIR APIs, and cloud deployment tools like Docker

  • Passionate about using tech to solve real-world health and accessibility gaps — for people and pets alike

I’d love your feedback and welcome any suggestions to align this idea more closely with OpenMRS goals. If it’s a good fit, I’d be happy to share a proposal draft or collaborate on adapting it to meet your community standards.

Thanks so much for your time and support!

Best,

Triva Watlington

Hi again OpenMRS community,

Just wanted to follow up and share the GitHub repository I’ve created for OpenPetCare, which outlines the vision, planning structure, and GSoC 2025 context for the project:

:link: GitHub Repo: GitHub - TrivaWatlington/OpenPetCare: An open-source, FHIR-compliant pet health record system for veterinary clinics, shelters, and pet owners

So far, I’ve structured the repo with:

  • A detailed README.md that outlines the project vision, tech stack, and FHIR alignment
  • Folders for documentation, frontend/backend planning, and wireframes
  • A sample FHIR Patient resource in JSON format to demonstrate how data modeling might look
  • A placeholder for wireframes and future mockups

While I haven’t implemented the backend API yet (still building skills there!), my focus has been on laying a clear foundation for how OpenPetCare could integrate with or complement the OpenMRS ecosystem using FHIR standards and modular design.

I’m open to feedback on how best to align this idea with OpenMRS’s architecture or GSoC priorities — and whether you think this could evolve into a viable proposal.

Thanks again for your time and encouragement!

Best,

Triva Watlington
