Hi OpenMRS Community,
My name is Triva Watlington, and I’m a Product Manager with a background in IT project management, e-commerce, and pet health tech. I’m applying for Google Summer of Code 2025, and I’m exploring the opportunity to contribute a project that complements the OpenMRS mission while extending support to a new domain: veterinary and pet health.
The proposed project is called OpenPetCare — an open-source, FHIR-compliant pet health record platform designed for animal shelters, veterinary clinics, and pet owners, especially in underserved areas. This system would enable:
-
Structured recording of pet vaccinations, diagnostics, and routine care using FHIR resources (
Patient
,Condition
,Immunization
,Observation
, etc.) -
QR code and offline (PWA) support for low-resource field teams and rescue organizations
-
A modular design that could be a companion application or integration-ready service aligned with OpenMRS architecture
I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether a project like this would be in scope for OpenMRS’s GSoC efforts this year — either as a standalone companion system, or perhaps as an extension/module within the OpenMRS framework.
Technical Experience & Background:
-
Product leadership at VCA Animal Hospitals, Dollar Tree, IKEA, and Creative Goods Merchandise
-
Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), Google Project Manager Certificate
-

-
Passionate about using tech to solve real-world health and accessibility gaps — for people and pets alike

I’d love your feedback and welcome any suggestions to align this idea more closely with OpenMRS goals. If it’s a good fit, I’d be happy to share a proposal draft or collaborate on adapting it to meet your community standards.
Thanks so much for your time and support!
Best,
Triva Watlington
