Do you mind starting by sharing with us the reason as to why you are not using the latest released version of the OpenMRS platform?

I’m having this same type of issue. I’m a (new) part of the OpenHMIS team writing modules for OpenMRS. I’m using version 1.11.7. I am not able to run the latest released version of the OpenMRS platform because my team hasn’t had time to fully update our OpenMRS dependencies to work with v2.0, though we are in the process.

In the meantime, I need to develop with version 1.11.7. I have a Windows 10 x64 machine and the following Java information installed. PATH=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_80\bin JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_80

In case my error is any different, please see this Pastebin for my command line output. https://pastebin.com/e9Jg9udR

I have been able to get Tomcat running and, when I copy the WAR file from the webapp/target directory to Tomcat, the OpenMRS site launches correctly to connect to my MySQL DB. It’s just that Jetty won’t run.

Do you get the same problem when you use version 1.11.8?

Yes, I get this error in 1.11.8. (Error output = https://pastebin.com/CTTfpdnk). I also get this error when I run 1.12.0 (https://pastebin.com/07TmqqyY).

When I run version 2.0.0 (and update my JAVA_HOME environment variable to Java 8), everything works. Unless the problem is related with Java 8, I think it has to do with Jetty on Windows since Jetty v6 is used in 1.8+ and v9 used in 2.0+. Thoughts?

I was trying to update 1.11.7 to use the Jetty v9 plugin to confirm this, but I haven’t had much luck yet.

Did you try googling with this text and see what comes up? “java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/servlet/jsp/JspFactory”

I did try googling that. I found many responses talking about the javax/servlet/jsp/jlt/core. That wasn’t what I was looking for, though I still tried those solutions to no avail.

The few that actually dealt with JspFactory either didn’t have responses/solutions or said it was due to some other error. When I went down those paths, I had no success, either.

Did you try these options? https://stackoverflow.com/questions/33725880/noclassdeffounderror-running-jsf-in-spring-boot

I did try those, and I still get the same error. I put these changes in the webapp/pom.xml file - is that the right place?

Are you running this from commandline using? mvn jetty:run

Yes. I pull the code down, install it with “mvn clean install -DskipTests”, then I navigate to the webapps folder and call “mvn jetty:run”.

Why do you skip tests?

As I was changing branches, I was skipping tests to go for a quicker install. The first few times I installed different branches, I ran tests and there weren’t any failures or errors in the results (though there were some skips).

When I go back and examine the 1.11.7 clean install with tests, I see some errors though no tests fail. I haven’t looked into this yet, but I can go explore this path to see if I have any success fixing the test errors.

I finally figured out my problem. First, I did a clean install of 1.11.7 (clean meaning that I deleted all downloaded Maven files in my .m2 repository before calling mvn clean install). Nothing worked, so I compared my Maven repository with a teammate’s who had 1.11.7 running on his machine. There were many files missing, which can be seen in the compare below (left is my teammate’s repository, right is mine).

After copying everything over to my repository from my teammate’s, the issue was solved. As you can see, most of the missing files (purple in the picture above) were JAR files. Not sure what happens to cause that, but now everything runs fine.

This is happening to me on a clean machine with mvn jetty:run.

This is working for me after changing the jetty plugin to this version.

org.eclipse.jetty

jetty-maven-plugin

9.0.0.v20130308

Currently webapp pom has this version

org.mortbay.jetty

maven-jetty-plugin

6.1.10

Can you share your pom.xml here
