Has anyone started a Claude.md file(s) for any parts of OpenMRS?
Perhaps a repo that could be contributed to, even if it’s just all markdown files? Something people can run with. Including more experienced people who want to provide more context without running into context window issues.
Ok a friend has suggested instead that we should make a plug-in for Claude Code: it’s like a collection of skills, that anyone can install with access to the repo.
Interesting. I need to learn more about that. Tbh the markdown file stuff was partly speaking to me because it’s easier for someone like me to contribute to
Hey Grace, a late update on this: @ibacher set up openmrs-contrib-ai-skills this week, and it’s pretty much what your friend suggested. It’s a Claude Code plugin marketplace where each skill installs on its own, and the skills also work in other agents like Codex and Cursor. There’s a catalog at https://skills.openmrs.org.
A skill is mostly a Markdown file (SKILL.md) with instructions, plus any reference docs it needs, so it should be easy to contribute to even if you’re not writing code. Skills also only load when they’re relevant, which helps with the context window problem you mentioned. CONTRIBUTING.md covers the details.
I just installed the skill, and that’s how I noticed this . We need to update the .gitignore files too, otherwise people might accidentally push those Claude folders to GitHub. btw, @grace , it’s great to see you again after such a long time
I don’t strictly want to block them in .gitignore. We have severalprojects that actively use .claude folders for development… and I think that’s ok. Contributors always need to be mindful of what they’re adding. But it’s pretty trivial to catch and block this in PRs. More nefarious is how we catch things like this.
YAY thank you @dennis! Great to see this. Nice that you started w/ Jira tickets etc
I’m not back yet, will still be a few months, but I’m trying to catch up on a few industry tools including how we’re using Claude in the community. Sounds like Claude Design is key for someone like me to learn. (I’ve also been freaking loving the connectors for things like Gmail - game changing.)
Do we have a DESIGN.md file for O3 / OpenMRS? I think that would be really good to help ensure that us PM-type people have some consistency in the auto-generated mockups we’re spitting out.
Examples:
IIRC @fanderson did you say you have one you’ve been using?
CC @pauladams@cduffy (thought you might be interested; I’m sure we could spin up a draft by getting an LLM to review our existing assets in our styleguide on zeplin and our zeroheight docs etc.)
Awesome! Thank you so much Paul! I think we’ve probably been luckier than most orgs because all our public design guidance is fairly accessible to LLMs (with the notable exception of the login blocker required for the zeplin styleguide) but having a baseline DESIGN.md file for the community should help both with contributor consistency and reduce token consumption for any contributors for whom token consumption is a rate limiter.
I took a quick first pass w/ Claude last night after posting this and it required so much manual improvement I was hesitant to post it (link to that here anyway) - but if you can find a way to get the zeplin styleguide consumed that I think will go a long way. I also think it would be a good place to embed some of our informal, non-documented “CarbonMRS” thinking, i.e. “use Carbon Design except when there’s a particular approach specific to OpenMRS”.
Side note to add, this has made me even more grateful for the awesome work Sonder has contributed over the years to our design documentation!!
