Dear OpenMRS community,
We are reaching out to request your active involvement in the upcoming online Hackathon, which will take place from 21–25 July 2025. This community-led initiative aims to onboard, mentor and empower new contributors to the OpenMRS ecosystem, with a particular focus on developing offline-ready solutions for some of the world’s most underserved areas.
Why it matters:
The EMR4ALL product has been fully delivered by OpenMRS volunteers, including OpenMRS 3 O3 and Bahmni on Raspberry Pi, Offline AI, and the Sync feature for Raspberry Pi to remote server, as well as the devices assembled by volunteers. The EMR4All Journey: How a Volunteer-Led Mission is Transforming Digital Health in Remote Communities – OpenMRS.org. These features were built with no funding, and the solution has been deployed in the field with the help of volunteers, including in Nigeria.
This hackathon is not a product showcase.
It’s a volunteer-powered collaborative space for learning and mentoring for newcomers to the OpenMRS environment . Developers will explore OpenMRS tickets, learn the codebase, and receive direct mentorship. Implementers and advocates will co-develop scalable models, strategies and workflows.
Hackathon goal:
Onboarding and mentoring new contributors to work on real OpenMRS tickets through hands-on, live sessions.
Community support needed:
Peer reviewers and mentors to assist participants.
- Help identify beginner-friendly OpenMRS tickets
- Join live sessions to support the development, implementation and advocacy tracks.
