🏆 Announcing the Winners of the OpenMRS AI Hackathon 2026!

We have just wrapped up our July 2026 OpenMRS || EMR4ALL - AI Hackathon, and the energy, innovation, and dedication displayed by our community have been truly inspiring. Over the course of the event, we saw brilliant minds come together to explore how Artificial Intelligence can be integrated into OpenMRS to improve clinical decision-making, enhance implementer workflows, and empower developers.

A massive THANK YOU :clinking_glasses: to all the participants, hackers and project teams. Your hard work and creativity are what make this community so special. We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to our distinguished panel of judges: Jonathan Payne @paynejd , Veronica Muthee @veronica, Daniel Kayiwa @dkayiwa, Michaël Bontyes @michaelbontyes, and Kevin Oyowe @koyowe for their time, expertise, and thoughtful evaluations. And to everyone who joined the live sessions, engaged in the discussions, and participated in the community voting: thank you for making your voices heard! :clinking_glasses:

Throughout the presentations and discussions, several key themes emerged around privacy, safety, Infrastructure, accuracy, adoption, among others, that will shape the future of AI in OpenMRS.

After combining the judges’ evaluations with the community votes, we are OpenMRS-thrilled to announce the top two projects that stood out for their clinical impact, technical execution, and readiness for community adoption.

:1st_place_medal: 1st Place: VitaSort - Clinically-Aware Queue Prioritization

  • Presenter: Sankalpa Sarkar @sankalpasarkar
  • Highlight: A highly practical, deployable solution using the deterministic NEWS2 model to dynamically re-rank patient queues based on clinical urgency.

:2nd_place_medal: 2nd Place: OpenMRS LiveKit: Privacy-Preserving Clinical Translation

  • Presenter: Gonzalo Alonso Galvez Cortez @duvet05
  • Highlight: An offline-capable stack for local transcription and translation, built with a strong emphasis on patient privacy and clinician review.

What Comes Next?

The hackathon may be over, but the work is just beginning. The top projects will be recommended for community adoption, mentorship, and scaling within the OpenMRS ecosystem. We are also looking forward to the launch of the OpenMRS AI Store, where these tools will eventually be made available to implementers worldwide.

Kindly, just a small clarification! I wasn’t part of the organizing team for the AI Hackathon. I think the recognition should go to those who planned and coordinated the event. I was invited by @bennyange to attend the presentations and participate in the community voting :slightly_smiling_face:.

Hats off to everyone who presented. While there are official winners, you are all winners for sharing your ideas and innovations with the community. To the sign language team, I believe in your vision, and I hope you can turn it into a reality. Wishing you all the best as you continue building it!

@slubwama, @jexsie, I wish you had an opportunity to see this presentation since it used Ugandan Sign Language, I believe your insights and expertise could help the team take the project to even greater heights.
