Solutions for Surgery in Africa Hack-a-thon Opportunity for OpenMRS?

Solutions for Surgery in Africa is a multidisciplinary group comprised of doctors, health economists, and digital health specialists that is based within the TICH Surgical Systems Research Group. Our mission is to leverage Africa’s young talent in information and communication technology (ICT) to find solutions to the lack of access to surgical care in the region. Currently 5 billion people, many of whom are in sub Saharan Africa lack access to surgical care.

We recently launched a call for proposals for young residents in East Africa to submit their original ideas for solutions that would tackle current barriers to accessing surgical care in their communities.

Finalists will be invited to participate in a Hackathon in Kisumu, Kenya in August 2018. The winner will win a prize of at least $5000 and will be mentored by global experts as they develop and pilot their idea.

We aim to appeal to all talented young men and women in ICT to develop innovations that will improve access to surgical services in East Africa. To achieve this, we kindly request your help in widely advertising this call for proposals with your networks which will help us reach our target audience.

Our eligibility criteria are as follows:

Residents of Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda

30 years old or younger

Applicants must have not completed more than an undergraduate/first degree

No professional or personal relationship with the organizing team/ judges (soon to be listed on our website)

The deadline for proposals is on the 21st of June 2018 at 23:59 CET. We appreciate any efforts made to disseminate this information in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
