Meet Our GSoC 2026 Contributors and Their Projects šŸš€

Dear Community,

We’re excited to announce the contributors selected for Google Summer of Code 2026 at OpenMRS! :openmrs: :tada:

This year, we were blown away by the number of thoughtful and high quality applications. We listed 9 exciting project ideas, but unfortunately, OpenMRS was allocated only 8 slots by Google meaning we had to make some extremely tough decisions.

Here are the selected projects and the amazing contributors who will be working with us this summer:

Project Title Selected Contributor
Patient Visit Summary Printing for OpenMRS O3 @amrita21p
Integrate O3 with the Authentication module @dilankavishka
Improved Appointments Calendar View @pratikdeb07
A Native O3 Frontend for the Audit Trail @rajprakash34245
Archiving Voided Data @shivvanir
Extend Audit Log Module @sudhanshu
Support for horizontal scaling of OpenMRS instances @suubi7
Service Queues @ujjawalprabhat

Detailed information regarding all projects is available here: Read more

To all selected contributors

We’d love to get to know you a little better!

When you get a chance, please reply to this post with:

  1. Where are you from / currently based?

  2. Tell us about your project in a sentence or two

  3. What made you choose to contribute to OpenMRS?

  4. Share one (or more) interesting or fun facts about yourself (could be a hobby, a fun story, or something unique about you!)

:love_letter: A message to those who were not selected

First and foremost, thank you. Thank you for your time, your energy, and your belief in what we’re building at OpenMRS. We know how much work it takes to put together an application, and we genuinely appreciate your effort.

Not being selected doesn’t mean your application wasn’t good enough far from it. In fact, we had to leave out many promising applications simply because of the limited slots. We saw potential. We saw passion. And we hope you won’t let this one decision stop you from continuing your journey.

Please don’t be discouraged. GSoC is just one doorway, the OpenMRS community has many paths for you to grow, contribute, and build something meaningful. In fact, some of our most impactful contributors never did GSoC they just showed up, contributed, asked questions, and grew into leadership roles.

:white_check_mark: What’s next for accepted contributors and mentors:

Let’s make this summer impactful, supportive, and fun.

Hello everyone!

I’m super thrilled and grateful to have been selected for GSoC 2026 with OpenMRS! A huge thank you to my mentors @wikumc, @nethmi and this wonderful community for the support and encouragement:yellow_heart:

Where am I from?

I’m from Odisha, India :ocean: Home to Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, where flamingos flock every winter and olive ridley turtles nest along the coast :turtle:

About my project

I’m working on the Patient Visit Summary Printing project, making it possible for clinicians to generate clean, structured PDF summaries of a patient’s visit directly from OpenMRS.

Why OpenMRS?

I’ve always wanted to do something meaningful in healthcare, and OpenMRS gave me the rare feeling that my code actually matters beyond the screen. The idea that something I write could help a doctor, a nurse, or a patient somewhere in the world is genuinely exciting. But what made me stay and fall headfirst into open source wasn’t just the mission. It was the community - welcoming, patient, and kind in a way I didn’t expect :yellow_heart:

A fun fact about me

This year I picked up the ukulele, and I’ve gotten to a point where I can play chords, strum, and sing along (emphasis on along, not well ą¼Žąŗ¶ā ā€æā ą¼Žąŗ¶). The guitar is next on my list, so if anyone has tips, I’m all ears!

Congratulations to all fellow contributors :tada: Let’s build something that matters this summer!

Hi Community!

I’m so excited to be selected as a GSoC mentee this year among thousands of applicants worldwide, with over 15,000+ applicants and 23,000+ proposals submitted. Hats off to my mentors @jayasanka @janithrs for your transparency, support, and for selecting me as your mentee. I’ll probably be an unstoppable headache for both of you :joy:

Where am I from?

I’m from Kandy, one of the most beautiful cities in Sri Lanka.

About my project

My project is mainly focused on bringing 2FA support to the OpenMRS system. I have to connect the bridge between the openmrs-module-authentication and the openmrs-esm-core .

Why OpenMRS?

I truly love this community and the amazing people here. Also, I want to make a meaningful impact in healthcare through technology.

A fun fact about me

My favorite hobby is swimming, and I’d say I’m an intermediate swimmer. :man_swimming:

Congratulations to all my fellow contributors! Let’s make this summer amazing and become one of the best GSoC student groups in OpenMRS :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi guys!

I’m very grateful and excited to be a part of this! A huge thank you to the community and my mentors @dkayiwa and @jonathan for giving me this opportunity. Congratulations to all the contributors @amrita21p @suubi7 @dilankavishka @phantomx @rajprakash34245 @ujjawalprabhat @pratikdeb07 :tada:

Where am I from?

I’m from Hyderabad, India. Home to the legendary biryani :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

About my project

I have been selected to work on the Archiving Voided Data project. This project aims to optimize the OpenMRS database performance by using a real-time Hibernate interceptor to immediately move voided records into an archive table, while a scheduled JobRunr task permanently purges expired data based on configurable retention policies.

Why OpenMRS?

I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges caused by the lack of EMR systems in the government hospitals I’ve worked at, so naturally, I was drawn to OpenMRS. I love the community here, and the amazing guidance I’ve received from the maintainers and other contributors has only cemented my interest.

In my free time, I love to read (I read a lot of fiction! - hmu for recs), travel, explore new cuisines and play video games

Looking forward to the journey ahead!!

I joined OpenMRS 2 months ago without any information about GSoC. Since I’m now certain about it, next year is my year :flexed_biceps: :flexed_biceps: . Otherwise, congrats to the ladies and gents that made it. :collision: :collision:

Hey everyone! :raising_hands:

Really glad to be here and congrats to all the fellow contributors!

So here’s how this actually started. Back in October 2025, me and @ujjawalprabhat decided let’s do open source. We looked around, and OpenMRS felt right. Neither of us fully knew what we were getting into, honestly. But we jumped in anyway.

What followed was months of learning, fixing the issues and asking a lot of questions. @dennis , @ibacher , @jayasanka , @nethmi I honestly can’t even remember how many questions I asked them. They never made me feel like a burden, which says everything about this community. Now it’s @olewandowski and @manojll turn to deal with me :joy:, so gentlemen, I’m so sorry for what’s coming >

I’m originally from Bihar currently living in Bengaluru, India and this summer I’ll be working on building a Native O3 Frontend for the Audit Trail. My job is to bring it into the modern O3 world an Audit Log Dashboard and Change History views right inside the Patient Chart, so clinicians and admins never have to leave the interface they already live in.

As for fun facts I’m genuinely someone who recharges in silence. Quiet place, just stillness. It sounds boring until you realize it’s where all the good thinking happens. :slightly_smiling_face:

Looking forward to the summer ahead. Let’s build something worth building.

and once again congrats to the folks @ujjawalprabhat @phantomx @amrita21p @shivvanir @pratikdeb07 @suubi7 @dilankavishka. Special mention to @sourav you were genuinely impressive, things just didn’t go the way they should have, but that says nothing about your abilities.

And to everyone who didn’t make it this time it’s just a matter of time, keep working hard, you’ll get there for sure :flexed_biceps:

Helloo peoplee!!

1. Where I’m from: I’m originally from Bihar, studying in Bangalore and as of now I’m in Bali as part of the Apple Developer Academy. Quite the journey it has been!

2. My project: I’m working on the OpenMRS O3 Service Queues app, which manages outpatient clinic flows. The core of my work is fixing performance issues caused by over-fetching data, cleaning up broken UI interactions and aligning the frontend with O3 design standards.

3. Why OpenMRS: I didn’t just want to write code but to make a real-world impact while doing so. The OpenMRS community is so welcoming and helpful that it felt like the perfect place for me to contribute and grow.

4. Fun facts:

  • I’m lowkey obsessed with billiards :pool_8_ball:
  • I really want to surf but I don’t know how to swim , the plan is to hopefully make it happen before I head back home! :crossed_fingers:

I want to thank the entire OpenMRS community for building such a wonderful space, it has genuinely helped me grow. Congrats to everyone out there trying to make someone’s life a little bit easier. Really excited to work and make the most out of this summer!

You can surf without knowing how to swim well or at all, I learned it the same way! I’m probably terrible now as I didn’t get to practice it :joy: Just do itt

hahaha…the thing is I’m scared that I’ll drown when I imagine me surfing :smiling_face_with_tear:…but I’ll take your advice to just do it. :slightly_smiling_face:
