Hey there, as the title suggests, I’m interested in contributing to OpenMRS (the idea of open-sources medical software interests me), however due to lack of available good-first-issues it’s slightly hard to get started.
I’m thus looking towards joining a team or indivisual on their tasks as my way to start.
You are absolutely right “intro tickets” are not always immediately available, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting started. A great way to begin is by joining one of the OpenMRS squads or working alongside an active contributor. Many tasks are not labeled as intro but are still very approachable with some guidance.
Here are a few suggestions to help you get started:
Join the OpenMRS community Slack and introduce yourself in the relevant squad channel.
Pick your area of interest e.g.backend, frontend or a specific module and follow the ongoing discussions.
Look for recently created and updated issues and comment to express your interest.
You can also ask if anyone is willing to mentor or pair with you on a task.
I submitted a Jira access request on Saturday (ISD-18993) and my OpenMRS Talk account has already been approved. I’m preparing to start contributing on a backend issue for GSoC 2026, so just wanted to gently check if anything else is needed from my side.
