Introduction –New Contributor, Exploring OpenMRS & Preparing for GSoC 2026

Hello OpenMRS Community,

My name is Bhavya Athukuri, and I am a pre-final year Computer Science and Engineering student from India.I recently began my open-source journey and have worked on resolving a few beginner and help-wanted issues. During this process, I learned about GSoC 2026 and started exploring organizations that align with my technical interests. That is when I came across OpenMRS, and I was truly inspired by its impact and strong community culture.

I am very interested in contributing to OpenMRS and plan to apply for GSoC 2026 under this organization. My technical background includes Java, Spring Boot, Spring MVC, and MySQL. I have developed two academic projects using these technologies and have also conducted a technical bootcamp within my college club, which helped me strengthen both my technical and communication skills.

I recently completed setting up previous year OpenMRS project environment in my system , and trying to understand codebase of OpenMRS to get familar with OpenMRS ,and exploring beginner friendly issues to start contributing meaningfully . I would sincerely appreciate any guidance on how to begin effectively, which modules are suitable for new contributors, and how I can prepare myself better for GSoC 2026.I believe that my curiosity, willingness to learn, and guidance from experienced mentors will help me grow and contribute effectively to the community.

I am eager to learn, contribute consistently, and grow with this community.

Looking forward to connecting with you all.

Thank you. Bhavya Athukuri

Hello everyone :waving_hand:

My name is Adwait Asagekar. I am a fresher, graduated with a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) degree from VJTI College, Maharashtra, India. While I am looking for full-time work opportunities, as an interest I have also wanted to contribute to open-source side-by-side. This is when I came to know about “OpenMRS”. I liked the community’s vision and work and want to be a part of it while learning about the project in-depth and improving myself in the process ahead. Also, I will be applying for GSoC 2026 under this organization. Very excited about it :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: .

My technical background -

  • Proficient in Java and Python.

  • Currently working with Django, Spring (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Web) suites.

  • Familiarity with Typescript and React.

  • Understanding of Git/GitHub basic workflows.

I know I will be making a lot of mistakes, but I am looking forward to the experience of growing with the community.

Thank you for letting me be a part of it :victory_hand: .
