Difference between Visits and Encounters

Hello,

I am studying OpenMRS for an upcoming implementation I´m involved. I´ve had experience with other EMRs where the Visit and Encounter term is used indistinctly. OpenMRS uses the terms as two different things, but still unclear to me what the difference is and what the use is in the system workflow?
